FAQ

Common questions

What a fractional CFO does, how it differs from other finance help, and how to get started.

What is a fractional CFO?

A senior finance leader who works with an organization part-time, on an ongoing basis or for a defined project. The organization gets CFO-level judgment without a full-time executive.

How is a fractional CFO different from a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper records transactions. A fractional CFO makes sure the records are right, turns them into reporting leadership can use, and advises on budgets, cash, risk, and the board. Most organizations need both.

How is it different from an outsourced accounting firm?

An outsourced accounting firm usually runs the day-to-day books. A fractional CFO sits above that work: reviewing it, owning the financial picture, and answering to the executive director and board.

When does a nonprofit need a fractional CFO?

When it has outgrown its bookkeeper, the audit is late or has findings, the board doesn't trust the numbers, a finance leader has left, or a new executive director needs a clear read of the finances.

How much time does it take?

It depends on the organization's size and the time of year. Time is usually heavier at the start, during the budget, and around the audit.
